This coffee exhibits a rich and powerful burst of black current and silky chocolate body with a bright finish. We recommend the medium roast, in order to accentuate it’s fruity undertone. Our Rainforest Alliance certified Kenyan coffee is grown on the infamous Nyeri Hill Estate, an expansive estate that stretches along the foothills of Mt Kenya. The region boasts mineral-rich volcanic soils renowned for producing some of the best coffees in the world. One of the first coffee farms established in eastern Africa, Nyeri Hill Estate planted its first coffee seedling in 1914. This large estate is run and managed by the Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri, a large employer in Nyeri county with 375 salaried employees and about 2,000 well-trained seasonal workers hired during the harvest season. The Estate boasts 1,415 hectares and allocates about 400 hectares to coffee growing in addition to tea farming, livestock management and horticulture. Since 1934, the estate has had its own wet and dry mills — originally used by the Consolata Fathers to mill their own coffee and export it back to Turin, their birth place in Italy. Today, the pristine wet mill has been well maintained and modernized and remains operational.
True to its mission, the estate supports the local community by providing subsidized health and educational facilities. Every year, this sustainable estate sponsors eight of the best performing local elementary students from disadvantaged families to attend the national high schools.
